Microcode Arrangement Method for Multiple Adapter Cards

       Described herein is a technique for the microcode
arrangement on multiple adapter cards to compose the device microcode
which supports various features.  The technique is widely applicable
to the microcode of the device which consists of several adapter
cards whether or not a co-processor is mounted on it.

      In Fig. 1, the common routine 1 includes the diagnostic program
for the main card, initializing program, monitor, the existing
adapter support program, and so on.  After the diagnostic program
execution, the routine to update the program 2 modifies Data handler
for adapter #1, 2, ...,n 3 to support the adapter #1, 2, ...,n and
the common routine to support the new adapter #n+1, and modified
routines are stored into a memory space.  The modification to support
the new adapter is performed based on the Modification data     n+1
for the main MPU program 5 which is on the new adapter card itself.
Then the modified common routine performs Diagnostic routine for
adapter #n+1 6 and handles the data of the adapter card #n+1 through
the Interface routine for adapter #n+1 7.

      This method is implemented on the following hardware
configuration.

      Fig. 2 shows an example of a hardware configuration of the
printer to utilize this method.  It is described from a view point of
the hardware related with the program for Main MPU 8.
