Running Diagnostics Without a Console

       A method is described which allows diagnostics on an IBM
RISC System/ 6000* to be run without the use of a keyboard or
display.

      The IBM RISC System/6000 has the capability to display a
sequence of numbers in 3-Digit Display under control of the Reset
Button.  The normal user interface is the direct attached keyboard
and display or an ASCII Terminal attached to serial port S1.  With
the ability to display a sequence of numbers with the IBM RISC
System/6000 3-Digit Display, it was decided to always run diagnostics
on all resources required for the normal user interface, before using
the normal user interface.  If no console can be found while loading
diagnostics in Service Mode, the Diagnostic Controller will test all
resources without requiring any user interaction.  This gave IBM RISC
System/6000 the capability of running diagnostics on all resources
without a console.

      The procedure is to run diagnostics on the keyboard adapter,
keyboard, all display adapters, and serial port S1 each time
diagnostics are loaded.  If a problem is detected, the Diagnostic
Controller will report the problem via the 3-Digit Display.  If a
problem is not detected, the Diagnostic Controller will check to see
if a console is available.  If a console is available, the Diagnostic
Controller will display a menu and wait for the user to respond.  If
a console is not available, the Diagnostic Controller will continue
testing all available resources. The Diagnostic Controller will
indicate what resource is being tested via the 3-Digit Display.  If a
problem is detected, the Diagnostic Controller will report the
