Abstract

Disclosed is a new horizontal scrolling method for handling fields of a two-dimensional table in a window environment. It has the following advantages: 1. The scroll bar is composed of blocks corresponding to all fields in a table. 2. Displayed fields are highlighted on the scroll bar. 3. Scrolling is invoked by clicking a block on the scroll bar. Conventional horizontal scroll bars in window systems are currently used for scrolling fields of table-type data such as those in a relational database or a spread sheet. They have the following defects: 1. It is not intuitive to scroll fields discretely by using a conventional horizontal scroll bar. When a user scrolls horizontally, it often means that he or she intends to scroll the table by fields.

Conventional horizontal scroll bars in window systems are currently
used for scrolling fields of table-type data such as those in a
relational database or a spread sheet.  They have the following
defects:
1.  It is not intuitive to scroll fields discretely by using
     a conventional horizontal scroll bar.  When a user
     scrolls horizontally, it often means that he or she
     intends to scroll the table by fields. However, the
     conventional scroll bar is a tool for scrolling a
     continuous spatial area.  It, therefore, causes the
     following problem.  Fig. 1 shows a snapshot of
     table-type data in a window. This table contains n
     fields (F1, F2, ..., Fn), of which only F4 (101), F5
     (102), and F6 (103) are shown in the window.  When the
     user intends to see the fields following F8, he or she
     cannot determine the position of the slider (104) on the
     scroll bar (105) because the field lengths of F6 and F7
     are unknown.
