The location of a tooling element from a threaded hole can be precisely determined by inserting a threaded device in the hole that has a tapered shoulder varying in diameter between the minimum and maximum limits of the minor thread diameter.

      The location of a tooling element from a threaded hole can be
precisely determined by inserting a threaded device in the hole that
has a tapered shoulder varying in diameter between the minimum and
maximum limits of the minor thread diameter.

      In the figure, the locator is a bolt-type of device having head
1 and conventionally threaded end 2 separated by tapered shoulder 3.
The taper is designed such that the diameter of the shoulder changes
gradually from the low limit of the minor thread diameter near the
threaded end to the high limit of the minor thread diameter adjacent
to the head.  The taper diameters can be obtained from a handbook
(Machinery's Handbook by Industrial Press Inc.).  When the device is
inserted in a tapped hole, the minor diameter is precisely located on
center.
