Abstract

In the design of electronic equipment, particularly computers, a common method of cooling is to use air, driven by fans or blowers (Air Moving Device or AMD). For maximum cooling, a high air flow is desired. However, with high air flow generally comes high noise as a byproduct, which is objectionable. A conflict thus arises between the need for increased air cooling (and the associated improvement in long-term semiconductor reliability) and low acoustical noise. To balance or reach a compromise between the need for high air flow and low acoustical noise, variable speed AMD's have recently been introduced. These devices can react to the general environment of the computer raised floor area by varying the amount of air flow.

      In the design of electronic equipment, particularly computers,

(Air Moving Device or AMD).  For maximum cooling, a high air flow is
desired.  However, with high air flow generally comes high noise as a
byproduct, which is objectionable.  A conflict thus arises between
the need for increased air cooling (and the associated improvement in
long-term semiconductor reliability) and low acoustical noise.  To
balance or reach a compromise between the need for high air flow and
low acoustical noise, variable speed AMD's have recently been
introduced.  These devices can react to the general environment of

      Acoustic specifications are driven by the comfort levels of
operators and can be under agency regulations.  If there is no
operator present or in the room, the allowable noise level could be
higher.  This invention uses variable speed AMD's operating at the
maximum required air flow during normal operation.  Normal operation
is defined as an unattended machine without any operators or other
personnel in the room.  When people work in or enter the room,
sensors, which could be interlocked with the entrance/exit door, or
infrared sensors, or acoustic sensors, are interconnected with the
variable speed AMD's for slowing down the AMD's to a predetermined...
