A Device for Applying Particulate Contamination to a Hard Disk Coupon

A device is disclosed which applies particulate contamination
to a coupon of hard disk magnetic medium.  A membrane filter
containing particles is pressed against the magnetic medium and moved
across the magnetic medium in a controlled manner.

In the figure, a stationary weight 1 holding foam swabs 2
applies pressure to a membrane filter 3.  The lower side of filter 3
contains particulate contamination 4 which contacts the magnetic
medium of a hard disk coupon 5. Coupon 5 is attached to a
polyurethane foam pad 6 which is attached to the drive arm of an
oscillator 7.  Oscillator 7 is attached to a stage 8 which moves
horizontally and perpendicular to the direction of oscillation.  This
produces a wiping action of filter 3 and particulate contamination 4
across the magnetic medium of a hard disk coupon 5.
