Outboard Processor EEROS Update

      This article describes a technique for updating an electrically
erasable read only storage (EEROS) resident on an electronic circuit
card.  The EEROS is used to contain information and program code for
the card.

      Some of the input/output (I/O) subsystem I/O adapters have
outboard processors.  These outboard processors have EEROS which is
neither directly readable nor writable by the I/O processor.  It is
necessary to update the EEROS which belongs to the outboard
processor.  In the method disclosed herein at initial microcode load
(IML) time, an EEROS update utility gains control of the subsystem.
Its main purpose is to update I/O adapter EEROS chips.  This utility
also has the capability to update the outboard processor EEROS chips.

      The data file, which normally would contain the EEROS data for
a normal adapter, contains the EEROS data for the outboard EEROS as
well.  The EEROS on the normal adapter is used in the method of this
disclosure to determine whether the outboard EEROS is up to date,
since the outboard EEROS cannot be checked.  In the same data file is
an EEROS write routine for the outboard processor to use to update
its own EEROS.  The update utility on the I/O processor loads the
EEROS data file into its own RAM.  The I/O processor communicates
with the outboard processor by means of special hardware registers.
