Direct Manipulation Icon-Pointer/Interaction for Multiple Selections

      Provided is a technique for enhancing visual feedback and
interaction during direct manipulation of multiple blocks of
information to overcome deficiencies of conventional implementations.

      The user is provided with the following capability to support
multiple discontiguous selections of text, list information,
spreadsheet cells, etc.
      -- Once multiple blocks of information are selected and the
drag operation is initiated, the selection cursor is replaced with a
conventional "arrow pointer" attached to a "collection icon" which
represents the set of selected information blocks
      -- The selection icon contains the following information: a
count of the number of selections; a graphic symbol representing the
selections
      -- The hot spot for the selected information is the tip of the
pointer, which is positioned within the body of the icon to
facilitate positioning of the information drop point
      -- As drag takes place, the selected information remains in its
original location and the pointer and collection icon move to the
target location
      -- The user has the additional capability of pasting the entire
collection of selections at one or more locations, or the user can
selectively paste parts of the selected information via a "collection
paste assist" function (e.g., pop-up with selection information)
