Alternatives for Initial Library Search Lists

This article describes an end user interface technique which
allows computer users to choose which type of list should be
presented upon the invocation of library, when a search may be
lengthy.

      The solution is described below.

When a computer user desires to scan his software library for
certain file(s), he invokes the library search program.  Upon
invocation, one of three panels appears.  The three panels are
dynamic list, static list, and list-description.  The user's profile
determines which panel appears.

Following are descriptions of the three panels:
      - Dynamic List
This panel shows a list of files which match a particular
search pattern (set of search criteria). The dynamic list is created
at the time that the library is invoked.  A user would use this panel
as his default if he were doing repetitive work and knew in advance
what kind of search criteria to use.  For example, the user might
always want to see files in alphabetical order.
      - Static List This panel shows a list of files, but was
previously stored, i.e., the list was generated previously, before
the current invocation of the library program. A user would use this
type of panel as his default if the library were slow to build a list
of files, and if it were not critical to the user that he have the
most current listing of files.
      - List description This panel allows th...
