User Interaction for Spherical Selector

Provided is a technique for interaction with a spherical
selection menu in order to overcome deficiencies with conventional
interaction styles.

Users are provided with a spherical menu which contains
selections "wrapped around" a displayed simulated sphere. In
addition, the user can request that an interaction control be
presented to facilitate rotation and interaction with the sphere.
The following capabilities are provided with the spherical
interaction control.
-- Displaying of a "cross-like" control with arrow buttons
which indicate the direction of scrolling. By clicking on the arrow
buttons with a pointing device, users can affect scrolling movement
of the sphere in the direction of the arrows.
-- The center of the "cross" contains a button which has
variable content depending upon the state of the sphere.  When the
sphere is displayed, the button displays a square.  If a user selects
the center button, then the sphere "unfolds", as if the spherical
menu were laid out flat.  All the selections of the spherical menu
are made visible. The center button changes state to become a circle;
selection of the center button returns the flat menu to a sphere, and
the content of the center button returns to a square.
-- Keyboard interaction technique are preserved, e.g., use of
the directional arrow keys together with a toggle key to flatten and
reshape the spherical menu.
