Use of Voltages on a Doctor Blade to Control Toner Amount and Charge in Monocomponent Development Systems

      Disclosed is the use of a voltage on a doctor blade in
monocomponent development systems which provides an additional
control on the amount and charge distribution of toner which is
doctored onto the development roller.

      Monocomponent development systems are used today in many of the
small copiers and printers because of their small size.  Especially
important are (1) systems in which the toner jumps a gap between the
development roller and the photoreceptor, and (2) systems in which
the toner is contacted by both the development roller and the
photoreceptor during the development process.

      Common to most monocomponent development systems is a doctor
blade which is placed against the development roller just prior to
the development region.  The purpose of the doctor blade is to
control the amount of toner which is on the development roller just
prior to the development step. This, of course, is a major factor
determining the amount of toner which eventually ends up on the paper
and, therefore, is a prime parameter in determining the copy quality
the customer receives.

      It has been found that placing a voltage relative to the
development roller on a conductive doctor blade has several
advantages.  First, the amount of toner after passing under the
