Joined Icons

      Provided is a technique for grouping individual icons into a
single collection in order to overcome deficiencies with conventional
techniques.

      Users are provided with an "icon grouping" capability. Icon
Grouping allows collections of icons to be joined for common
interactions, while allowing interaction with individual icons in the
grouping.  Icon Grouping functions as follows:
O    Allow icons to be joined visually on the screen.  Each
individual icon is individually selectable.
O    Dragging is performed on the entire Icon Grouping, although
operations can be performed on one or more items in the collection.
O    Dragging of objects can be targeted to a specific icon or the
collection.  Operations can also be defined for one or more items in
the collection.
O    The Icon Grouping can be customized by end users, e.g., adding
more icons to the grouping or displaying in one of several forms.  As
required, icons can be sized larger or smaller to facilitate
selection.  The user can also customize rules which bind the icons.

      The major concepts of the Icon Grouping are: collecting
multiple objects or icons; acting upon an individual object or the
collection; grouping rules and customizing.

      The benefits to the end user include new functionality, better
real-world metaphors, elimination of window hierarchies, work-step
elimination, better utilization of screen space by elimination of
intermediate and non-esse...
