Lubrication Via a Textured Pin

Disclosed is a system which provides for the lubrication of a
pivoting lever.  By texturing the pin, liquid lubricant migrates
along the pivot pin into the area of sliding contact.  The pin
texture consists of a cross-hatched pattern of "V"-grooves.

A lubricant reservoir 1, the pivoting lever 2, and the textured
pin 3 are depicted in the Figure.  The lubricant reservoir contains a
liquid lubricant that is drawn onto the textured pin by capillary
pressures.  The lubricant reservoir can be either an oil impregnated
porous material, or a grease.  The lubricant migrates along the
cross-hatched pattern of grooves into the pivot contact area and
lubricates the pivot which rotates about the axis of the textured
pin.  The grooves generally have a "V"-shape in order to prevent
excessive wear at the pivoting contact and are of the size of the
roughness of the pin.
