Method for Specifying Selective Deletion of History Information

      This article describes a method whereby an enterprise user can
specify that the existing history log information associated with a
document be deleted and replaced by the new (most current)
information when the maximum storage limit for the history log is
reached.

      Enterprises which are engaged in the process of interchanging
information may wish to keep a log of actions which were performed on
a document. An enterprise may have certain storage constraints on the
number of actions that can be recorded within a history log. A
mechanism is needed whereby an enterprise can request that when the
maximum storage limit for a history log is reached, selected
information be kept while other history information be deleted and
replaced by the most recent information in a history log. Currently
there is no mechanism in the office environment whereby an
enterprises can specify the selective deletion of historical action
entries to be replaced by the most recent historical actions.

      This article provides a mechanism which permits existing
historical log information associated with a document to be replaced
by the new history information based on certain selection criteria
for preserving or replacing. Entries designated as replaceable can be
prioritized entries to be replaced in certain order when the history
