This application describes the use of a stepper motor driven valve to control the activation of an evaporator defrosting system in a household refrigerator/freezers.

 

Description: 

Evaporators in household refrigerators/freezers must be defrosted periodically.  Energy is consumed when this is performed.  In addition, with an electric defrost, the heat must be removed from the cabinet after the defrost is complete.  Conventionally an electric heater is used to defrost the evaporator.

In the subject design, a refrigerant valve driven by an electronically controlled stepper motor driven rotatable shaft is used to select a refrigerant circuit that bypasses the condenser and capillary tube, providing compressor discharge gas directly to the inlet of the evaporator.  This gas heats the evaporator, melting the ice.
