Labeling Without Laminate Process

      Disclosed is a process that enables bar code label
identification at the beginning of an electronic card manufacturing
process. The image of the bar code is fused into the film with
infrared heat.

      Electronic card assembly and test processes require bar code
identification on the products as soon as possible in the process.
Because of the harsh environments of manufacturing, bar code labels
have failed to provide a readable image after chemicals and heat have
affected the print.  The traditional approach to this problem has
been to apply a laminate film over the label. This procedure improved
the process; however, it had other problems. The laminate discolored
the image, causing poor bar-to-background contrast.  The laminate
occasionally releases from the label causing refraction of the image
when scanned.

      The disclosed process does not use laminate. The infrared ovens
used to reflow solder paste in the surface-mounted process, fuse the
carbon image into the label's film. The label is then impervious to
heat and chemicals.

      Another application of this concept is to add a fusing device
to the label printer so the labels will be fused before they are
applied to the card.
