Landing Zone Measurement

      A method to test for correct autolock installation and
functional head landing zone using the Servo Track Writer (STW) is
disclosed.

      The STW uses the OD crash-stop (soft-stop) position A (see the
figure) on the disk as its reference or "zero". The data zone is
located between position A and B (the innermost "data track") which
is a constant distance set by the STW.  The actuator is moved to the
ID crash-stop (soft-stop) position D, and a location measurement is
taken. The autolock is then activated, and the actuator is moved back
against the autolock latch.  The head is now located at position C,
and another measurement is taken and compared to a criteria which
ensures that the head will not land over the innermost data track,
position B.  The difference between the measurements taken at
position C and D is the actual autolock setting.  This is compared to
a criteria which ensures a sufficient minimum gap exists for autolock
function during the life of the file.
