Mainframe Implementation of Pull-Down and Pop-Up Windows

Many developers are using pop-up and pull-down windows
(hereafter simply pop-ups) to enhance their user interfaces. While
several windowing tools are available for the personal work stations,
there are relatively few windowing tools for mainframes.

If the environment in which the programmer develops his
application allows windows to be placed over existing windows, then
providing pop-ups can be accomplished quickly.

The programmer must first record the screen information in the
area at which the pop-up will be placed.  The programmer must also
make special note of the screen attributes at the right-most edge of
the pop-up.

Secondly, the programmer must write the pop-up over the
existing window, adding the screen attributes from the existing
screen.  In this way, the existing screen will not have its
attributes changed.

Finally, when the user has finished with the screen, the
programmer must rewrite the original contents of the window where the
pop-up previously appeared.

The user interface will have the appearance of having a new
window placed over the existing window, and later of the new window
being removed and the old window completely restored.
