Graphical Indexes Based on Sort

This invention provides for rapid access to a sorted list of
objects, especially using a pointing device such as a mouse.

Conventional graphic computer user interfaces provide a card or
book tab metaphor for presenting information. Conventional computer
systems also provide simple list windows of objects with the ability
to present objects according to a sort ordering.

Current systems providing a tab metaphor do not support sorting
functions.  It is desirable to combine the computer capabilities for
sorting with the benefits of the tab metaphor user interface.

In this invention, a list of objects is presented using a card
or book metaphor including graphical tabs.  The graphical tabs are
labeled according to the initial sort order of the list.  For
example, if the list is sorted alphabetically by the name of the
objects, the tabs will be labeled with letters of the alphabet.

The new process included in this invention allows the sort
order of the objects to be changed.  When the sort order is changed,
new tabs are presented appropriate for the new sort order.  For
example, if the list is sorted by date, new tabs may be presented
listing days of the week or months of the year.  If the list is
sorted by size, new tabs may be presented listing the size of the
objects included in the corresponding pages of the book or cards in
the file.
