Multi-Line Entry Field with Drop-Down List Box Capability

      A method to allow a single control to present a list of items
that can be inserted or replaced into a multi-line entry field is
disclosed.

      The drop-down combination box control is a combination of a
single line entry field and a drop-down list box.  This control
allows items in the drop-down list to be selected and placed into the
entry field.  This control can be seen in Fig. 1.

      Described extends the concept of the drop-down combination box
in two ways.  First, the entry field is not limited to a single line.
Therefore, when multiple lines of input are required, this control
can be used.  Second, the input mode of the keyboard and marked text
in the entry field will be respected.  This means that the selected
item in the drop-down list will be inserted or replaced into the
multi-line entry field as determined by the current status of the
keyboard and entry field.  The concept of this new control can be
seen in Fig. 2.

      In order to make this control work, it is necessary to keep
track of both the cursor location and the cursor size. The cursor
location is used to determine where the selected list item will be
placed.  The cursor size is used to determine the input mode.  When
the cursor is a thin bar, then the selected list item is inserted at
