Programmable Auto Answer for Facsimile Machines

Disclosed is an algorithm for enhancing the "auto-answer" mode
in a facsimile machine.

Most facsimile machines provide two options for controlling the
answering of incoming calls - manual answer and auto-answer.  Manual
answer prevents the machine from answering the phone automatically
when the telephone is used primarily for voice communications.  A
deficiency in current implementations is that an operator can very
easily forget to activate the auto-answer mode at the end of the work
day or during absences during the day and thereby miss all facsimile
jobs which arrive during those times.

The idea disclosed here is that of allowing the facsimile
machine to automatically switch to auto-answer mode at pre-
programmed times, after a specified period of time has expired, or
after a specified time that the phone has been idle.  This algorithm
would also allow the auto-answer mode to be cycled on and off at any
number of pre-set times.
