Abstract

A parallel database is one where the data (i.e., tables, views, etc.) is spread over n nodes (i.e., physical nodes). In demonstrating the performance improvement of a parallel database system, measured in transactions per second (TPS), a real-time monitor was created. The real-time monitor collected TPS rates from parallel server nodes, and displayed it via a speedometer image. Each node has a monitor process which periodically sent the TPS rate back to the collector node (i.e., the node that displayed the speedometer). Database performance applications are run on various nodes, and they relay completed transactions to the monitor process.

       A parallel database is one where the data (i.e., tables,

demonstrating the performance improvement of a parallel database

      This article presents a graphical interface that enables a user
to run performance applications on any configured node from any
configured node.

      A user would perform the following scenario to start
performance applications on any parallel database node.
1.  The user enters a command which brings up the initial selection
list window.
2.  The user places the sprite (i.e., mouse pointer) on the Show PDB
(parallel database) TPS meter row and clicks a mouse button.  The
selected row will appear in reverse video and below the Selection
title.  See Fig. 1.
3.  The user places the sprite in OK box and clicks on a mouse
button.  The user is then presented with a window with a speedometer
