Abstract

Laptop computers, pen-based computers, and other portable computing devices typically rely on a custom manufactured rechargeable battery having two or more exposed contacts on the same end of the battery case. The battery life between charges is typically shorter than the desired usage time so users of these devices often carry one or more spare batteries. The exposed contacts constitute a potential safety hazard when the batteries are carried in briefcases, suitcases, and so forth. Objects, such as a metal ball-point pen, paper clip, or spiral notebook binding, coming into contact with the exposed contacts can short-circuit the battery causing excessive heat, melting, or even fire.

      Laptop computers, pen-based computers, and other portable
computing devices typically rely on a custom manufactured
rechargeable battery having two or more exposed contacts on the same
end of the battery case.  The battery life between charges is
typically shorter than the desired usage time so users of these
devices often carry one or more spare batteries.  The exposed
contacts constitute a potential safety hazard when the batteries are
carried in briefcases, suitcases, and so forth.  Objects, such as a
metal ball-point pen, paper clip, or spiral notebook binding, coming
into contact with the exposed contacts can short-circuit the battery
causing excessive heat, melting, or even fire.

      These batteries can be designed with a built-in contact cover.
This cover could slide over the contacts when the battery was being
carried.  It would be retracted during battery usage and charging.
Such a cover could also serve as an indicator of whether or not the
battery is charged.  A closed cover would indicate the battery is
charged.  Additional conveniences could be built into the cover
design, such as making it spring-loaded to automatically retract when
inserted into the computer or a charging unit.
