Abstract

For the measurement of adhesion between different materials, peel tests at 90~ have commonly been used. For such measurements, the peel tester needs simultaneous and identical movements along vertical and horizontal directions. The simultaneous movements are frequently achieved using two translation stages moving, respectively, along these two directions. Here, we describe a different way of achieving the simultaneous vertical and horizontal movements using one single translation stage. With the single stage moving diagonally at a 45~ angle, it allows simultaneous and identical movements along the vertical and horizontal directions for the peel test at a 90~ angle.

A 90 Degree Peel Tester Using 45 Degree Off Normal Movement for Simultaneous and Identical Translations Vertically and Horizontally

      For the measurement of adhesion between different materials,
peel tests at 90~ have commonly been used.  For such measurements,
the peel tester needs simultaneous and identical movements along
vertical and horizontal directions.  The simultaneous movements are
frequently achieved using two translation stages moving,
respectively, along these two directions.  Here, we describe a
different way of achieving the simultaneous vertical and horizontal
movements using one single translation stage.  With the single stage
moving diagonally at a 45~ angle, it allows simultaneous and
identical movements along the vertical and horizontal directions for
the peel test at a 90~ angle.  The stage has been used for many
measurements, with results comparable to those using peel testers
with two moving stages with separate vertical and horizontal
movements.  The single stage peel tester contains a load cell, vacuum
gripper, vacuum chuck for sample holding, rotation stage, adaptor
plate, x-y stage, a 45~ angle plate, and motor-driven translation
stage, with an adjustable rod/clamp assembly supporting  the whole
system.
