A mechanism is described which designates a list of repositories for automatic directed storage by assigning a list of keyword strings that are to be searched for within files to be stored. Files which are found to contain a most number of matches for a repository shall automatically be stored there.

Method of and Apparatus for Automatic File Management

A mechanism is described which designates a list of
repositories for automatic directed storage by assigning a list of
keyword strings that are to be searched for within files to be
stored.  Files which are found to contain a most number of matches
for a repository shall automatically be stored there.

Mail systems currently require a user to manually peruse mail
items for the purpose of filing away into a desired repository.  A
method is needed for automatically filing received mail items away
into appropriate categorized repositories.  It is also desirable to
implement an automated filing system capable of examining contents of
files for the purpose of being stored at an appropriate destination.

For example, an OfficeVision* Virtual Machine (OV/VM)
embodiment of this article would automatically file incoming mail
items as they are received when a person is away on vacation.
Configuration may be:

REPOSITORY         STRING LIST

CALENDAR           "Calendar function"
                   "Calendar API"
                   "Calender schedule"
                   "Calendar"
                   "Calendar meeting"

MAIL               "Mail function"
                   "Mail API"
                   "Mail schedule"
                   "Mail"
                   "Mail meeting"

AB                 "Address Book function"
                   "Address Book API"
                   "Address Book schedule"
                   "Address Book"
                   "Address Book meeting"

FILECAB            "File Cabinet function"
                   "File Cabinet API"
                   "File Cabinet schedule"
                   "File Cabinet"
                   "File Cabinet meeting"

NOTE               DEFAULT

The mechanism executable is responsible for matching string
entries in    the configuration file to inbound mail items and
keeping a count of the number of matches found for each repository.
The repository with the maximum number of matches is selected for
storage destination.  Any mail notes with one or more string matches
will be filed in the corresponding note log.  If a match occurs for
more than one repository then the repository with the maximum number
of matches is selected.  The DEFAULT keyword assignment to a
repository indicates if no matches occurred, then the mail item is
automatically filed in the default repository.  Any time there is an
equivalent number of matches between the maximum matched repository
configurations, one is selected and a logged report entry is saved to
a log file.  The log...
