Abstract

Disclosed is a method of controlling the relative humidity in a machine enclosure, such as a fixed-disk storage device, within a narrow range of humidity. Specifically, we disclose the use of conditioned desiccant, and process for preparing said desiccant, which allows the initial humidity within the enclosure to be set at a specified value, and to remain near the desired value over the early period of machine life. Beyond this initial period, the desiccant acts to reduce changes in humidity that would otherwise result from temperature changes during power up or power down.

Conditioned Desiccant and Process of Preparation

      Disclosed is a method of controlling the relative humidity in a
machine enclosure, such as a fixed-disk storage device, within a
narrow range of humidity.  Specifically, we disclose the use of
conditioned desiccant, and process for preparing said desiccant,
which allows the initial humidity within the enclosure to be set at a
specified value, and to remain near the desired value over the early
period of machine life.  Beyond this initial period, the desiccant
acts to reduce changes in humidity that would otherwise result from
temperature changes during power up or power down.

      Desiccants are used in substantially-sealed machine enclosures,
such as fixed-disk storage devices, to maintain a constant level of
relative humidity within the device in response to rapid thermal
changes (see figure).  Desiccants also enhance machine component
reliability by helping to maintain a low level of relative humidity
over the drive lifetime.  However, this traditional use of desiccants
provides a very low level of relative humidity during initial machine
operation.  This may be detrimental to a number of mechanical
components within the enclosure which can be adversely affected at
low relative humidities.
