Technique for Passing Item-Specific Parameters to Associated Applications

A program is disclosed that allows multiple item-specific
parameters to be passed to an application invoked to open an item.

OfficeVision/2* (OV/2) mail items have 3 pieces of information
that uniquely identify the particular item:  Mail Container Name,
Mail Entry ID, Mail Content File Name.  When an OV/2 user defines a
File Association, allow the user to specify Parameters to be passed
to the application upon invocation.  These parameters are in addition
to the Filename parameter.  Allow users to specify placeholder keys
in the parameter string to define where to place the Mail Container
Name, Mail Entry ID, and Filename in the parameter string.

If a user has defined a File Association with a parameter
string that contains %M, when a mail object of that type is opened,
the %M is replaced with the Mail Container Name for that object.  If
the parameter string contains %E, the %E is be replaced with the Mail
Entry ID for that mail object.  If the parameter string contains %*,
the %* is be replaced with the Mail Content File Name for that mail
object.  If no %* is found in the parameter string, the Mail Content
Filename is appended to the parameter string.

After all parameter substitutions have been made, the
associated application is invoked with a parameter string that
contains all the information needed by the application to invoke OV/2
