Managers need to be aware of tasks and status underway for members of their department. The common need to attend meetings results in avoidable delays in assigning work resulting in missed deadlines or inadequate time for proper preparation. Managers are also expected to be aware of current status and adjust priorities to insure completion of assigned work.

      Managers need to be aware of tasks and status underway for
members of their department.  The common need to attend meetings
results in avoidable delays in assigning work resulting in missed
deadlines or inadequate time for proper preparation.  Managers are
also expected to be aware of current status and adjust priorities to
insure completion of assigned work.

Control Elements

In the Figure:

1.  The Assignment Table (20) contains user-defined keywords and
    standard action that the owner (manager) wishes to happen.
    Typical actions could include:

    o   Route PROJECT BLUE to Larry

    o   Route STATUS to Sally; Schedule Review -2 Business days

    o   Route FYI to WEEKLY File; Print on Friday

    o   Save I-am-CC to monthly notelog.

2.  The Delegation Manager (10) periodically inspects all incoming
    mail, perhaps on an hourly basis.  When the text contains a key
    word the Delegation Manager will take appropriate action, usually
    forwarding the mail to a department member and optionally
    scheduling a meeting.  All action will be documented in the
    Delegation Log (30).

3.  The Delegation Log (30) contains both action taken by the
    Delegation Manager (10) and the User (by inspecting outgoing mail
    to department members) but also Status notes or meetings
    initiated by the department member assigned the task.
