Abstract

A technique is disclosed that allows users to designate a termination date for alternate voice mail greetings. Current voice mail systems typically allow the user to record several alternate greetings. The user must interact with the system to begin the use of an alternate greeting and again to end the use of an alternate greeting and return to the regular greeting. Frequently, users forget the latter step upon returning to work. As a result, voice mail greetings are often out of date. A technique is disclosed that allows the user to designate a termination date for alternate greetings at the time the greeting is invoked. When a user chooses to begin an alternative greeting, the voice mail system would query the user for a termination date when the system should begin using the regular greeting again.

to begin the use of an alternate greeting and again to end the use of
an alternate greeting and return to the regular greeting.

     A technique is disclosed that allows the user to designate a
termination date for alternate greetings at the time the greeting is
invoked.  When a user chooses to begin an alternative greeting, the
voice mail system would query the user for a termination date when
the system should begin using the regular greeting again.  The user
would type in the termination date using the key pad on the
telephone.  At the user-specified date, the system would
automatically switch the user's greeting from the alternate greeting
back to the regular greeting.
     As an extension, the user could specify another alternate
greeting that the system would switch to on the termination date (as
opposed to switching back to the regular greeting).
