Abstract

Disclosed is an enhancement to the user interface for online access to data bases. This enhancement is intended to help users with the selection of the right synonyms to be used in a search. The basic principle of this disclosure is that when one or more keywords are specified for a search, a list of possible synonyms appears on the screen for the user to choose from. The user is then able to select specific synonyms from this list to enhance the database search. This list may appear automatically or in response to the user's explicitly requesting it. The list of synonyms may take different forms in different environments, such as a pop-up window in a windowing environment, or a new screen in non-window environments.

Automatic Synonym Help during Online Database Access

Disclosed is an enhancement to the user interface for online
access to data bases.  This enhancement is intended to help users
with the selection of the right synonyms to be used in a search.  The
basic principle of this disclosure is that when one or more keywords
are specified for a search, a list of possible synonyms appears on
the screen for the user to choose from.  The user is then able to
select specific synonyms from this list to enhance the database
search.  This list may appear automatically or in response to the
user's explicitly requesting it.  The list of synonyms may take
different forms in different environments, such as a pop-up window in
a windowing environment, or a new screen in non-window environments.
This feature should be an option for the database user so that
experts in the subject area of the data base may choose not to make
use of this help.
