Multiple Selection Combo Box

      Disclosed is the design of an advanced graphical user interface
"control" for selecting multiple items from a list.

      Graphical user interfaces are constrained by the size of the
user's screens and "controls" or display mechanisms displayed within.
Often the user is confronted with a multitude of options that are
spread across several screens, thus losing the contextual image.  The
controls currently provided are too large or restrictive in the
number of selections allowed.

      The Multiple Selection Combo Box solves this problem by
allowing multiple selections and text entry through the same control
and panel.  The following examples demonstrate the use of the
Multiple Selection Combo Box.  Fig. 1 shows the control in its
initial state.

      The control is comprised of an entry field and a selection icon
on the right.  The entry field allows users to type selections into
the control directly, as well as display those that have been
selected via the drop down list.  The diagram shows the control in
its initial state with several names already selected, possibly for
electronic mail destinations.

      The power of the control is displayed in Fig. 2, where the user
can select options from the drop down list.

      The drop down list contains a scrollable list of selectable
items.  When an item is selected, it is appended to the items
displayed in the entry field.  The list will highlight each item a...
