Abstract

A technique is disclosed to allow users to search for a specific file based on the content of the file, including multimedia objects. When the user requests a search, a window such as that shown in Fig. 1 is displayed. The user interacts with the different fields in the window as follows:

Multi Media Object Content Search

      A technique is disclosed to allow users to search for a
specific file based on the content of the file, including multimedia
objects.  When the user requests a search, a window such as that
shown in Fig. 1 is displayed.  The user interacts with the different
fields in the window as follows:

o   Filename - this field (see 1a in the figure) can be used to limit
    the scope of the search.  Since the function searches the actual
    content of the files, the user may be able to provide some
    information about the filename or filetype.  For example, suppose
    the user has 10 graphic files concerning Project X and has named
    them projx1, projx2, projx3 ...  projx10.  They all have a
    filetype of graffile.  The user wants to search these 10 files
    for a particular chart.  In order that the system does not have
    to check every file in storage, the user can type "projx*
    graffile" in the filename field.

o   Text - this field (see ib in the figure) allows the user to
    search for a particular string of text that may be in the desired
    file.

o   Objects  - this field allows the user to search for a file
    containing a specific type of graphical object or shape.  Several
    buttons would be available so the user could select the type of

    objects the desired file contains (for example, pie or bar
    charts).  See 1c in the figure.
