Smoke Damage-Protection for Personal Computers and Workstations

Disclosed are methods and means for preventing smoke and soot
damage to computer boards and disk drives in computer workstations.
They have particular application in preventing damage from smoke
produced by fires.

In one embodiment, a standard smoke-detector circuit is added
to the inside of the computer chassis, which terminates power to the
system when smoke is detected.  This would not filter out the smoke,
but would keep it from being "sucked in".

A more versatile approach is as follows.  When the
smoke-detector circuit detects smoke it makes a decision about
whether the smoke condition is serious enough to cause problems to
the computer.  The smoke detector and the processor could go through
the following shut-down steps depending on the severity of the smoke
(Fig. 1).

Smoke level= 1, processor posts a warning message to sysop

Smoke level= 2, processor reduces fan speed to absolute minimum
needed to cool the system (less air movement, less chance of problems
from the smoke)

Smoke level=3,  processor begins shutting down any part of the
processor that is not essential to processing (degraded mode) and
copies any critical information that it needs for recovery

Smoke level=4,  Process posts warning message to all users that
system is shutting down.  Fans continue operating at slower speed.

      Smoke level=5,  System is s...
