Down-Stream Recipient Mail Acknowledgement

      A methodology is described which allows the sender of a mail
note to specify acknowledgement for one or more particular users,
whether the users are in the actual recipient list or not.

      Current mail systems support what is known in the art as mail
acknowledgement.  This feature allows the sender of a mail item to
know when recipients receive the mail item.  A status code or note is
returned to the sender, describing when the mail was received or
acted upon.  This feature is currently only implemented for
recipients designated in the original note.  There are times a user
wants to know when a recipient receives a mail note and the recipient
is indirect.  An indirect recipient is a person who receives a mail
item but is not on the original mail note recipient list.  For
example, a manager may want to send a mail note to a recipient which
delegates a task that ultimately requires the recipient to send a
mail note to another user.  The original sender would like to know
when said another user receives the note.  Bob sends to Jane but
wants to know if and when John gets the message.  A method is needed
for specifying acknowledgement for recipients which are not in an
original recipient list.

      An acknowledgement will be returned to the sender for each
recipient specified which receives the mail.  For example, Bob at
