Automated Connector Plugging Force Analyzer with Multi-Axis Displacement Features

      Described is a device to analyze the forces required to engage
electrical connectors.  The device allows for the analysis of forces
with the connectors in any desired state of alignment.

      The device consists of a rigid support structure 1, a method to
adjust and control the connector alignment 2, a moveable platform and
drive motor for connector engagement 3, a force gauge 4, and linear
encoder 5  to measure force and displacement of the test sample and
computer and software for analysis and storage of the collected data.

      The sample connector 6 is mounted on the moveable platform 3
and the connector header 7 is attached to the alignment device 2.
The desired alignment is then set with the alignment device and
locked in position.  The operator then enters the desired plug ging
rate and force limit into the control computer and initiates the
test.  The device plugs the connector, records the position and
plugging force (see the figure).

      When the preset force limit is reached, the device automati
cally reverses and extracts the connector from the header.  Data is
also collected for the extraction process.

      When the test is completed, the operator has the option to
display the data in graph form or store the data to disc for later
analysis.
