      Disclosed is a non-lossy method for converting workstation
display text images for viewing on a standard television.

      Typical methods of converting text from workstation-display
signals to standard TV signals are lossy and sometimes expensive.
One method is to use a video camera to "photograph" the workstation
screen.  Usually the entire screen cannot be resolved.  Another
method is to use an expensive signal converter.  Both of these
methods result in a loss of quality.

      The disclosed method uses a workstation program that captures
the actual digital (e.g., ASCII) text, with all its attributes
(screen location, color, etc.).  The program converts the information
into the command stream of a standard TV character generator.  The
information is transmitted to the character generator via a common
interface (e.g., RS-232).  The character generator then performs its
primary function, resulting in the display of the computer text on
the TV.

      If the digital information is recorded on the workstation's
disk, other advantages are realized.  First, the data can be edited
(e.g., text, color, location, timing).  Second, the data can be
"replayed" at will.  Third, since the data is in a standard
workstation file, it can be easily duplicated and distributed via
diskette, network, etc.
