Abstract

Disclosed is a device for the manipulation of three-dimensional graphical objects. The device couples two traditional input devices, a mouse and a trackball. The mouse controls the linear position of the graphical object, the trackball controls the rotational position of the object. By operating together, they allow more intuitive control of the graphical object. The device can be constructed by attaching a trackball to the top of a mouse. Moving the mouse would move the graphical object; rotating the trackball would rotate the object. The user would have a geometrical model of his object to manipulate since the disclosed device would model the position and the orientation of the user's object in three-dimensional space.

the graphical object, the trackball controls the rotational position
of the object.  By operating together, they allow more intuitive
control of the graphical object.
