Abstract

Some programs within a graphical user interface create temporary icons which are randomly placed upon the desktop. These spawned icons may be difficult to locate, since the user is not certain where the operating system will place the new icon. Additionally, a cluttered desktop may obscure these temporary icons.

Reserved Desktop Area

Some programs within a graphical user interface create
temporary icons which are randomly placed upon the desktop.  These
spawned icons may be difficult to locate, since the user is not
certain where the operating system will place the new icon.
Additionally, a cluttered desktop may obscure these temporary icons.

This invention describes a method by which the user designates
a portion of the desktop for temporary applications.  Once defined,
this desktop area can only contain icons that are spawned from
running applications.  A user cannot drop objects on this reserved
area.  All dropped icons "slide" off of the reserved area and are
repositioned elsewhere on the desktop.  The user is able to instantly
locate spawned icons within the reserved area of the screen.

The mechanism by which this reserved area is defined is a
Presentation Manager* application called Tag-along Manager.  This
program is similar to the PM Desktop Manager in that a hot key
sequence brings it to the foreground of the PM session.

The client area of this window displays a "miniature" view of
the PM desktop.  If a reserved area is already defined, it is
graphically represented within the view.  In the following figure, a
reserved area has already been defined in the upper right corner of
the client window:
