Abstract

Many activities performed within an office environment are not directly related to inbasket activities. Users can receive objects on their workstation through a variety of means. Current operating systems are typically independent from inbasket status states. Users aspire to methods by which time varying multimedia objects can be copied into their inbasket. Prior methods require the user to constantly switch references from inbaskets to operating system commands. For example, the UNIX* Xmail requires users to edit a multi-media presentation to contain only the portions of interest to the user and then send the file to the user's own inbasket to create a mail basket entry for the object. In addition, users usually must manually upload files and perform distribution requests.

on their workstation through a variety of means.  Current operating
systems are typically independent from inbasket status states.  Users
aspire to methods by which time varying multimedia objects can be
copied into their inbasket.  Prior methods require the user to
constantly switch references from inbaskets to operating system
commands.  For example, the UNIX* Xmail requires users to edit a
multi-media presentation to contain only the portions of interest to
the user and then send the file to the user's own inbasket to create
a mail basket entry for the object.  In addition, users usually must

      This article describes a method by which a Device Driver
Service permits users to copy segments of a multi-media object
directly into their inbasket.  It allows the user to utilize
time-based characteristics to determine how much of the object should
be copied.  This invention allows the user to essentially issue an
edit command and a copy command as a single request.  Moreover,
transition states can now be maintained for the object.  This methods
employs a media transition table that allows segments of selected
objects to be copied into the inbasket.  Parameters can be specified
to the copy command to allow time-varying constraints of the object
to be calculated by the device driver.  For example, transfer 10
minutes of a video presentation to my inbasket.  The implementation
of a device driver allows users to reference their inbasket via a
drive letter, e.g., drive E = Inbasket, thus copy items to drive E
causes registration of the entries within the inbasket.  The device
