Abstract

Disclosed is an all digital method for transmission of image data for High Definition Television (HDTV), which is compatible with NTSC signaling. The present invention proposes to section the image data to be transmitted into two components: an NTSC component and an augmented component. The two component scheme allows for NTSC signaling, thus maintaining compatibility with the existing NTSC standard for television transmission. The NTSC component will be transmitted in standard NTSC format over the standard NTSC channel, that is, a 6 Mhz bandwidth channel with 6 Mhz guardbands between the channel and any neighboring channels.

      Disclosed is an all digital method for transmission of image
data for High Definition Television (HDTV), which is compatible with
NTSC signaling.  The present invention proposes to section the image
data to be transmitted into two components: an NTSC component and an
augmented component.  The two component scheme allows for NTSC
signaling, thus maintaining compatibility with the existing NTSC
standard for television transmission.  The NTSC component will be
transmitted in standard NTSC format over the standard NTSC channel,
that is, a 6 Mhz bandwidth channel with 6 Mhz guardbands between the
channel and any neighboring channels.  This component will be
"digital" in that it will be composed of segments which can be chosen
from only a finite number of distinct signals, each of which are
separated from each other in some norm by a predetermined minimal
amount, that being determined by the system designer.  The augmented
component, which is composed of the extra digital information needed
to form HDTV quality images, can be transmitted in any desirable
digital format.  THe guardband near the NTSC channel, or a channel
allocated elsewhere in the frequency spectrum, may be used for
transmission of the augmented component.  This channel has known
signal-to-noise characteristics as a function of frequency, thus
transmission of the augmented compenent is limited to what shall be
called a constrained channel.

      The digitized scanned data is passed through a 2-dimensional
filter bank of K filters, yielding K sequences of numbers, referred
