Abstract

The facility of Elastic Feedback described in this disclosure is the smooth restoration of a link to its straight path on a VDU screening a graphical procedure. Staged animation tells the user what is happening as opposed to a one pass redraw of the straightened link. The user sees a link dynamically shrink in length, with the angle of its bend becoming rapidly more obtuse, until the link is back in its straight line.

Elastic Feedback Mechanism for PAS Graphical Procedures Link

      The facility of Elastic Feedback described in this disclosure
is the smooth restoration of a link to its straight path on a VDU
screening a graphical procedure.  Staged animation tells the user
what is happening as opposed to a one pass redraw of the straightened
link.  The user sees a link dynamically shrink in length, with the
angle of its bend becoming rapidly more obtuse, until the link is
back in its straight line.

      Frequently Personal Graphical Procedure applications provide a
Manager window into which a user may drag iconic objects (from a
palette) that represent application programs.  They are then
interconnected using 'Links' to provide a flow of control and data
between objects.  In some respects it is similar in appearance to a
programmers 'flow chart'.

      By using button 2 augmented with shift and control keys a user
can dynamically draw a link from one object to another.  The links
between objects are intially drawn as straight lines, however the
user can manipulate a link using the mouse to form any number of
angled bends, perhaps to reroute a link around an object that is in
its direct path.  At each bend a small 'pin' icon will be placed, as
if the link were made of string and the pin was causing the bend.

      If the user were at a later stage to delete the object causing
the interference it may well be desired for the link to be restored
to its direct route...
