Abstract

Disclosed is a program for controlling a pocket-lift mechanism used in a perfect binder system. In a bindery control system, feeding demographic pages, a mechanism is used to lift signatures away from the operating means of the pocket feeder. The lifter must be lowered some time before the pocket is to feed, and raised if the pocket is to be inhibited for more than some number of cycles. The disclosed program monitors books in the line to perform this control of the pocket lifter.

      Disclosed is a program for controlling a pocket-lift mechanism
used in a perfect binder system.  In a bindery control system,
feeding demographic pages, a mechanism is used to lift signatures
away from the operating means of the pocket feeder.  The lifter must
be lowered some time before the pocket is to feed, and raised if the
pocket is to be inhibited for more than some number of cycles.  The
disclosed program monitors books in the line to perform this control
of the pocket lifter.

      A control system for the bindery system is assumed that
includes a means of tracking books and for identifying what book is
located in any slot of the bindery line.

      A single, global variable, LiftLookAhead, is used to indicate
how far ahead the pocket lifting algorithm should look.  If the
variable is zero, then pocket lifting is disable.  Nominally, this
value is 3.

      For each pocket of the system, a variable called LookAheadCount
is initialized to the value of LiftLookAhead.  In addition, all
lifters for all active pockets are initially lifted.  This occurs
when the job is initiated, so all pockets also initially inhibited,
by setting the digital output active.  If pocket lifting is
inhibited, the digital outputs are left inactive.

      During each cycle of the machine, a process is run to determine
the new state of the pocket lifter digital output.  If pocket lifting
