Abstract

This disclosure describes a method, means and computer program to be used in a document assembly system such as a bindery line to facilitate defining the mapping of signatures to pockets and for defining the signatures selected for each Makeup Code. The system only allows mapped signatures to be selected for a Makeup Code and also prevents referenced signatures from being unmapped in later editing.

Signature to Pocket Mapping for Bindery Line Control

This disclosure describes a method, means and computer program
to be used in a document assembly system such as a bindery line to
facilitate defining the mapping of signatures to pockets and for
defining the signatures selected for each Makeup Code.  The system
only allows mapped signatures to be selected for a Makeup Code and
also prevents referenced signatures from being unmapped in later
editing.

When a job is loaded to run demographically, the Makeup Codes'
signature selections are decoded with the signature to pocket map to
produce a Makeup Code pocket selection map.  As books are being
formatted from tape data, the Makeup Code within the tape data is
used as a key for determining which Makeup Code pocket selection map
is associated with this particular book.  Once the book's pocket
selection map is determined, the book is defined sufficiently to be
built.

If the line's pocket configuration needs to change, say for
instance due to a hardware problem, the job would need to be stopped,
the signatures physically moved to another pocket configuration, and
the signature to pocket map changed to reflect the new location of
each signature.  As mentioned earlier, the system prevents mapping
errors by ensuring all signatures previously referenced are not
unmapped in later editing.  Although there may by thousands of Makeup
Codes defined, they will be decoded with the edited signature to
