Abstract

In optical character recognition systems, when a character is misrecognized, it can be presented to an operator for display and correction. In accordance with the invention, a bit mapped image of the document, which has been subjected to character recognition, is displayed on a CRT monitor. Alongside the bit mapped image of the document the alphanumeric string containing the incorrect or misrecognized character is also displayed. The region of the bit mapped document image from which the misrecognized character was extracted is highlighted. This necessitates the storage of the approximate coordinates for the location of the misrecognized character. In addition, the corresponding misrecognized alphanumeric character in the alphanumeric string can also be highlighted.

This text was extracted from an ASCII text file.
This is the abbreviated version, containing approximately 100% of the total text.

Highlighting of Error Characters

In optical character recognition systems, when a character is
misrecognized, it can be presented to an operator for display and
correction.  In accordance with the invention, a bit mapped image of
the document, which has been subjected to character recognition, is
displayed on a CRT monitor.  Alongside the bit mapped image of the
document the alphanumeric string containing the incorrect or
misrecognized character is also displayed.  The region of the bit
mapped document image from which the misrecognized character was
extracted is highlighted.  This necessitates the storage of the
approximate coordinates for the location of the misrecognized
character.  In addition, the corresponding misrecognized alphanumeric
character in the alphanumeric string can also be highlighted.  In
this manner, the operator will have an easier way of identifying the
original character shape which has been misrecognized and can then
type in the correct character for further processing of the
alphanumeric string.
