Battery Pack with the Memory for its Capacity

      Disclosed is a battery pack with a memory chip for storing its
capacity.  With this battery, accurate indication of the battery
capacity can be available.

      Fig. 1 shows the battery pack with the memory for its capacity.
This device is composed of a normal battery pack (batteries,
thermistor, plus terminal, minus terminal and the thermistor
terminal), back-up memory and four signal pins.

      Following is the mechanism of the device.  An MPU in the system
(notebook PC) was assumed which could measure the battery
charge/discharge current and voltage and calculate the accurate
capacity of the battery pack.  DATA pin is used for the data
transmission relating to the battery capacity.  R/W # pin is used for
the data direction.  If the signal is high, the data flows from the
battery pack to the system and if the signal is low, the data flows
from the system to the battery pack.  CLOCK signal is used as the
data transmission clock.  VCC is the power source of the memory chip
which is alive as long as the system in ON.  When the VCC is not
supplied from the system, the memory is retained by the battery.  The
MPU in the system reads/writes the battery capacity data from/to the
memory in the pack periodically when the battery is attached to the
system.  And even when the battery pack is out of the system, the
battery capacity data is kept by the memory.
