Position Sensor

      Disclosed is a device that senses the position of an access
mechanism of an optical disk drive at power-on calibration.  The
disclosed device is to sense the movement of a flexible cable
attached to the access mechanism.  By this device power-on to ready
time is reduced.

      The disclosed device will be best understood with reference to
the drawings (Figs. 1 and 2) which schematically show a mechanism of
sensor.  A flexible cable 2 attached to an access mechanism is bended
and connected to a connector 4 on a driver circuit board 6 through a
opening of the board.  As the access mechanism moves back and forth,
the bend of the flexible cable 2 moves back and forth in response.
The disclosed device is to sense this movement of bend of the
flexible cable 2.  A pair of a photodiode 8 and a phototransistor 10
is put on the board so that they face each other across the opening.
A phototransistor 10 detects an emission of a photodiode 8 and this
pair works as a sensor.  If the sensor is normally located to the
movement of an access mechanism, the flexible cable 2 is too thin to
shut off the emission of the photodiode Fig.3.  The point of this
sensor is to locate the pair with some angle to the movement of the
access mechanism.  By this, a bend of the flexible cable 2 shuts off
the emission of the photodiode 8 at certain position of the access
mechanism.
