Ion Trap Apparatus

      Disclosed herein is an apparatus which desorbs ions off from
materials and trap the ions.  The apparatus consists of steam
generator (1), sample vessel (2), cooling jacket (3), and condensed
water reservoir (4), as shown in the figure.

      Purified water in the steam generator is warmed by a heating
jacket, kept constant at a designated temperature and bubbled by
purified air to prepare saturated vapor.  The steam generated is
introduced to the sample vessel placed in a thermal oven where the
temperature is precisely controlled.  Ions desorbed off from the
sample material with the introduced steam dissolve into steam vapor,
and are carried into chilled site with the cooling jacket.  The
condensed water containing the ions is finally saved in the water
reservoir.

      The water is fed to ion-chromatograghy analysis or other
suitable method for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the
collected ions.  Potassium hydroxide solution (KOH aq) with
concentration of less than 1mM may be added to the condensed water
reservoir in advance.

      As an optional procedure, pressure of the whole system can be
raised by reducing an orifice (5) of air outlet.  This provides an
accelerated condition for ion desorption and material degradation.
