Abstract

Reel-to-reel and cartridge tape drives utilize an air compressor to provide pressurized air to hydrostatic air bearings in the tape path. The air bearings maintain a thin layer of air between the tape and the air bearing surface to reduce friction and wear in the tape path.

Combination Air Speed Control Muffler and Pneumatic Relief Valve

      Reel-to-reel and cartridge tape drives utilize an air
compressor to provide pressurized air to hydrostatic air bearings in
the tape path.  The air bearings maintain a thin layer of air between
the tape and the air bearing surface to reduce friction and wear in
the tape path.

      The 3480/90 tape drives are specified having a back pressure
relief valve for use as an air pressure control device.  The valve
maintains a constant pressure in the pneumatic system at any
altitude.  As our products become smaller and smaller, the
"limitations" on the size and number of pneumatic components have
increased to the point of causing us to seek new alternatives.

      To counter the above problem, a combination Air Speed Control
Muffler and back-pressure relief valve is proposed.  The device gives
us the flexibility of the small and less expensive component coupled
with a valve that can compensate for different elevations without
being adjust ed in the field.  The Air Speed Control Muffler is
designed to act as an air relief valve.  The noise of the escaping
air is muffled through a sintered bronze material that outperforms
the sound foam material used for the same purpose on our current
drives.

      Such a device would give the tape drive industry a solution to
our space, pressure adjustment, and altitude adjustment problems.
