Mechanical/Pneumatic Device to Accurately Feed, Locate and Clamp Small Wires Prior to Bonding on a Substrate Structure for Electrical Interconnection Purposes

      Disclosed is a device to accurately feed fine wire to an
ultrasonic bonding mechanism.  Three major advantages are derived
from this invention:

o   Wire position accuracy

o   Wire drag control by using the pneumatic clamp feature.

o   The wire clamping action does not distort or leave marks on the
    wire surface.

      The wire guide block (1) in Fig. 1 has a V groove (2) machined
through its center.  This concept allows full wire freedom during the
wire feed cycle and very high position accuracy when the wire is
pushed against the sides of the V groove.

      Mating with block (1) in Fig. 2 is the pneumatic wire clamp (4)
and the clamping membrane (6).  The barbed fitting (5) is connected
to cavity (7) to provide pressurized air to membrane (6) when wire
clamping action is necessary.  The machined counterbored cavity (3)
in block (1) allows full membrane wrap-around the wire for a very
effective wire clamping action.

      Fig. 3 shows a partial wire feed assembly comprised of a wire
spool with wire (8) threaded through block (1) and extending from
block (1) to allow wire feeding which is part of one of the sequence
in the wire bonding operation.
