Color Liquid Crystal Display

      Disclosed is a color liquid crystal display in which, in the
edge area surrounding the display area, a black photo polymer 5 which
is used as a black matrix on thin film transistors and color filter,
are formed as light shielding layers to improve display quality.

      The Figure shows a cross-section of the sample liquid crystal
displays using this method.  Color filter of display area (1,2,3) and
frame light shield pattern (4) are fabricated at the same time by
changing photo mask pattern.  Corresponding black photopolymer
pattern exists on counter substrate which has thin film transistor
formed.  Black resist spectrum determines which color filter should
be extended in order to obtain highest optical density of display
frame.  This structure realized sufficient optical density compared
to the ordinary metal black matrix.

      Stacked structure of color filter at the frame area realizes
higher optical density.
